Ferric Chloride in water desalination
Ferric Chloride: Key to Efficient and Reliable Desalination
Ferric chloride (FeCl₃) is widely used in water desalination as an effective coagulant during pre-treatment. It helps remove suspended solids, colloids, algae, and natural organic matter that can cause fouling and shorten the life of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. By promoting the formation of larger, faster-settling flocs, ferric chloride improves water clarity, lowers the silt density index (SDI), and protects membrane performance. It also reduces color and organic content in seawater, making it an essential step in producing high-quality desalinated water. When applied at the right dose, ferric chloride enhances operational efficiency, reduces cleaning frequency, and ensures more reliable, cost-effective desalination processes.
Ferric Chloride and Meeting New Jordanian Phosphate Standards
Ferric Chloride's Role in Meeting New Jordanian Phosphate Standards
As Jordan strengthens its environmental regulations to protect water resources and ensure long-term sustainability, recent updates to national phosphate discharge standards have raised the bar for wastewater treatment. The Swedish Jordanian Chemicals Company (SJCC), the country’s only local manufacturer of Ferric Chloride, proudly supports this shift with high-quality, NSF-60 certified treatment solutions designed to meet and exceed the new national benchmarks.
Updated Phosphate Standards: From 2006 to 2021
Phosphate (PO₄) discharge limits in Jordan have been significantly tightened to address issues like eutrophication and contamination of groundwater and surface water. These changes are outlined in the revised Jordanian Standard JS 893, issued on September 1, 2021.
Application
2006 Standard (JS 893:2006)
2021 Standard (JS 893:2021)

How Ferric Chloride Is Used in Water and Wastewater Treatment
Ferric chloride (FeCl₃) is one of the most effective and widely used coagulants in water and wastewater treatment. Its strong coagulating and flocculating properties make it essential for removing suspended solids, organic matter, and impurities from water — ensuring cleaner, safer, and more sustainable operations across multiple sectors.
1. Municipal Water Treatment
In drinking water treatment plants, ferric chloride is used as a primary coagulant to remove turbidity, color, and organic materials. When added to raw water, it reacts with impurities to form flocs — large, easily removable particles. This process:
Reduces organic load and color
Improves water clarity and quality
Helps meet drinking water safety standards
2. Industrial and Municipal Wastewater Treatment
Ferric chloride is highly effective in industrial and municipal wastewater treatment. It helps remove:
Suspended solids and colloidal particles
Phosphorus (essential for preventing eutrophication)
Heavy metals and other contaminants
It also aids in sludge conditioning, improving dewatering performance and reducing disposal volumes — making treatment processes more efficient and environmentally friendly.
3. Poultry Water Treatment
In poultry farms, ferric chloride is used to treat drinking water systems and process water. It helps:
Control microbial growth and biofilm formation
Reduce organic contaminants and suspended solids
Maintain water clarity and hygiene for healthier poultry
This ensures that the water provided to birds is clean and safe, directly contributing to improved animal health and productivity.
4. Slaughterhouse Water Treatment
Slaughterhouses and meat processing facilities generate wastewater rich in fats, proteins, and organic matter. Ferric chloride is an effective solution for:
Precipitating organic and inorganic materials
Reducing biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD)
Breaking down emulsified fats and oils
Improving overall effluent quality before discharge or recycling
